Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) has approved the award of a contract for two important bus services. The contract provides services for Renfrewshire residents to travel within their community and to a main shopping hub in the area, Erskine Shopping Centre.
The contract, which has been awarded to McGills Bus services Limited, was announced at SPT’s Operations Committee on Friday 15 November.
It covers the provision of the hourly 520 bus service, which runs Monday to Saturday within Bishopton, and also the hourly 521 service, which runs Monday to Saturday between Bishopton and Erskine Shopping Centre.
This contract runs up until 16 July 2016 and the total investment in these services comes to just under £150k.
SPT Vice Chair Denis McKenna said:
“SPT has been providing these vital services to Renfrewshire residents for a number of years. It is unfortunate that we have had to go to market with this contract earlier than expected but the Partnership is delighted that we have, not only, managed to find a supplier who is able to deliver this contract for the foreseeable future but, who is also, doing it at a lower cost.
“It is a difficult time financially for many people and it is important that we continue to make sure that public transport is available to those who need it most. This contract is also a lifeline for local business, ensuring that Erskine Shopping Centre’s customers can continue to easily access it using public transport.”
The SPT Operations Committee also approved the extension of its MyBus service. There will be one additional vehicle providing accessible door-to-door transport to rural communities across Renfrewshire from 12 January 2014.
The contract was awarded to Glasgow Citybus Limited and will run up to 7 July 2018. SPT is investing almost £250k in the extension of this service in the Renfrewshire area alone.
