Get Ready Glasgow! The Queen’s Baton relay is on its way – and the Subway is going to play its part in making sure it’s welcomed with a Shoogle.
The relay, which has been touring Scotland for the past month, finally arrives in the host city on Sunday, July 20 – in time for the opening ceremony of the XX Commonwealth Games three days later.
The relay – a chance to celebrate Glasgow’s local heroes as every baton bearer has been nominated in recognition of their contributions to local sport, community and youth – will tour the city, taking in several of its world-famous landmarks – and it’s only right they should include the Subway.
St Enoch and Buchanan Street station staff will be on hand to ensure it gets treated with extra care on the short Subway leg of its city centre journey on Sunday morning.
The baton carrier for this leg has yet to be announced – but we’re pretty sure it won’t be Simon Smart.
During the duration of the three-day relay, Glasgow’s streets will be brought to life with live bands, drummers and choirs, marking its progress.
The roads and paths will be animated with circus acts, dancers and street performers. Community spaces will be transformed with banners, bunting and colourful installations. It is an exciting opportunity for everyone to be involved, from cheering along the route as it snakes across the city to attending special events.
The Queen’s Baton Relay is a great opportunity for everyone to show their support for their community heroes carrying the baton; demonstrate pride in their city, and; show the world just how Glasgow celebrates!
Each day will culminate in a Finish Line Celebration Event where revellers can enjoy a feast of Commonwealth flavours. These take place in Springburn Park, Sunday July 20; Victoria Park, Monday July 21, and; the Queen’s Park Recreation Ground, Tuesday July 22.
There will be ‘come and try’ sports, arts and dance activities along with lots of special entertainment including dance performances and a spectacular music programme that will be headlined by the energetic force of Salsa Celtica.
