Merchant City Festival is back!

We’re so excited that the Merchant City Festival is back for another excellent year and this time, as part of the cultural programme for the European Championships 2018!

The arts festival takes over Glasgow’s historic Merchant City on 4th – 5th and 9th – 12th August 2018, bringing with it some inspiring, unusual and extraordinary performances. Expect everything from street performance and arts programmes to amazing food and drink and live music!

Here are some highlights from all of the activities and events happening around Merchant City Festival:

Festival 2018 Carnival Procession Sat 4th August, 12pm – 1pm, starting at George Square

Get involved with an extra special Festival 2018 Carnival Procession and watch the streets of Glasgow come alive with local and international performers and community groups. A vibrant feast of music, dance and street performance the colourful celebration and hundreds of revellers, will make its way through the city streets taking in the Festival 2018 sites and finishing at Go Live! At the Green.

Merchant City Festival MarketsSat 4th – Sun 5th August, 10am – 10pm 

Explore eclectic markets offering a range of amazing crafts, gifts, and foods from around the globe. Look out for our Local Larder Food Trucks and Scottish Market, showcasing the best in Scottish produce.

Mischief La Bas presents: ‘Happy Birthday Mr. Mackintosh’Sat 4th – Sun 5th August, 12pm – 3.30pm, various places throughout Merchant City Festival

Glasgow-based street theatre company Mischief La Bas brings Charles Rennie Mackintosh back to life in this, the year of his 150th birthday. The great man will be visiting his home city with his wife Margaret MacDonald and some other close associates.

Makers Space – Sat 4th – Sun 5th August, 12pm – 6pm
Glasgow is home to a vibrant community of designer/makers and we want to shout about it! Come meet our designer/makers, get involved, get behind the scenes access and if you fancy it get hands-on designing and making! (While the event is family-friendly, most of the hands-on activities have been designed with teenagers and adults in mind.)

Dyptik present D-Construction – Sat 4th – Sun 5th August, 2pm – 6:30pm

An ultra energetic hip-hop dance performance with a powerful beat and an oriental twist. Six dancers experience the liberation of the mind through movement. Merging into a group, they create a stronger entity; breaking apart, they assert their uniqueness.

Rotate GenerateThurs 9th August, 5pm – 6pm – Candleriggs

Rotate Generate is Paragon’s new inclusive live music and dance piece involving disabled and non-disabled dancers and musicians. The piece explores raw, natural energy and the way we harness that energy and turn it into a force for good.

Big Feed on Tour Thurs 9th – Sun 12th August, 11am – 10pm – Candleriggs Square

With a great variety of extremely tasty street food on offer, a fully licenced bar to offer refreshments and their own musicians and DJ’s, Big Feed will be a great addition to Merchant City Festival this year!

Family Afternoon FunThurs 9th – Fri 10th August, 12pm- 4pm, Merchant Square 

Two afternoons of free events and activities for all the family including performances, live music, and interactive fun. No need to book, just come along to Merchant Square!

Lids Open Day at City Halls Sun 12th August, 11am – 6pm, City Halls

Bring your friends and family along to listen in on a rare chance for you to play two beautiful Steinway Concert Grand Pianos on stage in the Grand Hall and in the Recital Room. All ages and abilities welcome. Gaun Yersel!

Virginia Street Glastival Festival Sat 11th – Sun 12th August, 12pm – 9pm, Virginia Street

Glastival Festival Tent makes its first appearance at Merchant City Festival. With DJ sets featuring tracks from all the biggest artists from this summers music festivals across the UK and throughout Europe, there will be an outside dancefloor should the weather be good to us.

 

All our festival highlights are just a few mins walk away from either St Enoch or Buchanan Street Subway and with all day tickets for just £2.90 and £1.45 for kids (under 5’s travel free) you can ditch the car and travel hassle-free.
