A new £500,000 Park and Ride facility with space for up to 150 vehicles could soon be built near Bellshill Railway Station.
Details of the plan were unveiled by SPT’s projects director Charles Hoskins at a presentation to members of North Lanarkshire Council’s Bellshill and District Local Area Partnership.
An open space site next to the former British Legion premises in Hamilton Road is the preferred location for the Park and Ride, expected to be approved as part of SPT’s capital programme on Friday.
It will be an ideal stopping point for the new hourly express train service between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh, which was launched in December.
A spokesperson for SPT said: “We’ve clearly demonstrated our commitment to Park and Ride and our ability to deliver these projects alongside partner organisations. These facilities make commuting easier, promote increased use of public transport and offer more sustainable travel choices.
“The current proposal is to accelerate the Bellshill project under our Park & Ride investment programme and we are working hard alongside North Lanarkshire Council to achieve this.”
