There’s still time to get involved with Beat the Street – Glasgow’s giant walking and cycling initiative which started at the end of August.

More than 4,200 people have walked and cycled 18,000 miles in just two weeks for Beat the Street – a free competition which challenges people to see how far they can travel around Glasgow in return for points and prizes.

Twenty-six schools and teams in Glasgow are competing against each other to see who can journey the furthest and win hundreds of pounds worth of prizes. However, organisers are inviting more people to get involved, particularly people who work in the city centre.

Participants have the option of nominating a charity team if they don’t have a school or workplace, and this year, players can choose to support one of three; Freewheel North, a cycling development charity that enables people of all ages and abilities to cycle as part of their everyday life;  Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue, who rescue, treat, and rehabilitate birds and animals so they can return to the wild; or Calum’s Cabin, a charity that helps the families of children with cancer.

Currently, Scotstoun Primary School is at the top of the total leaderboards and SSAFA Glasgow is on top of the highest average points but it is still all to play for.

Taking place until 9 October, Beat the Street is transforming Glasgow into a giant game with players tapping special sensors called Beat Boxes dotted across the areas.  Beat the Street is being delivered by Intelligent Health and Glasgow City Council, and is funded by the Scottish Government.

City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction, Councillor Anna Richardson said: “Beat the Street is a fantastic, free-to-enter initiative and anyone can get involved. Why not consider starting a workplace team and see if you could walk or cycle to work as well as getting out and about at lunchtime?  Not only would you be doing great things for your health and to improve air quality, but you could walk your way into supporting a local charity.”

If you're heading out to join in the fun, don't forget that there's a Beat Box near our Buchanan Street Subway station in the city centre. Look out for it on a signpost adjacent to the south enterance of our Buchanan Street Subway station on Saturday 14 September between 10am and 5pm and tap it to collect points!
